Guess who went potty in the box yesterday sans diaper ? Yes it's true ! While performing a routine diaper change it was determined our special needs kitty, Bobo Marie was nearly in the midst of a tiny poo so I put her in the biodome kitty box (fingers crossed) hoping she'd finish the job. After much digging and such she got very quiet for maybe 30 seconds or so then I peeked in to see her turn around, sniff and start scratching / digging to cover something up. In the past when I've done the same thing she never quite finished the job but yesterday she actually did. Andrew and I took this as a very good sign, because it signals she may possibly be gaining some nerve sensation down there and it apparently registered physically (and mentally) what she needed to do about it. For most cats of course this is a routine normal function but for Manx Syndrome kitties like Bobo with limited to no nerve sensation in the bowel/bladder area it's a rare occurrence. This was the very first we've ever witnessed with Bobo. (Her sister the litterbox champ from the age of 6 weeks was nonplussed and unavailable for comment.) When reflecting on the morning's activities we recalled Bobo had been digging around in the kitty box before Scatman Monahan performed his routine diaper inspection. Most likely that's when she first sensed the call to nature. After about 15-20 min so, I stripped her down and encouraged her to hop into the box to do her thing. Now nearly 6 months old, Bobo finally used the kitty box like a regular house cat ! Afterward she peered out of the biodome and looked up in wonder with those big green eyes of hers. I beamed with pride and we both lavished her with praise. It was quite a memorable family moment. Then during my shower Bobo poked her head around the curtain as she often does, to see what's up with mommy in the rainbox. Since I wasn't in a rush to get to work as I am most mornings at 6am, I removed her diaper and brought her into the shower with me. Cradling her bottom in my hands, I held her up under the warm shower and allowed the water to run down her tummy and legs. She really seemed to love it. She didn't squirm or try to wriggle out of my hands at all. This is a very unique creature - just a tiny imp of a cat I've come to know as Bobo. Such a sweet and funny little thing; we love her and her sister to pieces. Andrew and I will continue working with our special needs girl to help improve the overall quality of her life. It's a pleasure and honor to share our life with Bobo and her sister Lilly. I'm so glad to finally have a couple kids of my own ! Pets truly do make routine daily life a joy (at least for us) each and every day ;.) Maybe one day Bobo will lead the way to new places all creatures can go without being held back by their differences.
