"It was another cold, bleak winter's day this past February when I came into the Veterinary Practice I had been doing some relief technician work. I have been a Vet Tech for 20 years, and thought I had seen just about everything there is to see in the world of small animal medicine. Boy, was I wrong. There, in the kennel was a small cardboard box. Upon closer inspection, I witnessed what appeared to be an entirely too young pup inside with a towel. When I went to the doctor to inquire WHY THERE WAS A PUP WITHOUT ITS MOTHER I was dismayed at the answer. A local breeder of Aussie Shepards had brought the pup in to be humanely euthanized because it was white. Why?? I asked, but no one could tell me. We had to do what the client asked, and without question. I went back to the kennel and put a hot water bottle in with the pup, thinking I could at least keep her warm. The doctor called me into the room and asked me to bring the pup, he just couldnt put it off any longer. I went to retreive the baby, and cried the whole time. When I returned with the pup, I just couldnt let him have her. I just stood there with tears in my eyes (and he had them too!) and said ""I cannot let you do this"" (this is a cardinal sin in Technicians!) He said, ""OK, well then do you want her?"" I quickly said yes, and we went about the necessary procedures to get the OK from the owner. Although reluctant, he finally agreed. I bottle fed her and became her ""mommy"". She thrived under my care, but didnt seem to be opening her eyes. I had never heard of ""Lethal White or Fatal White"" in dogs. Horses, yes, but not dogs. I had my suspicions that she may be deaf, but not blind as well. At 25 days, she had not yet opened her eyes and the doctor said he thought she didnt have any eyes. Finally she opened them at 1 month old, but they were grossly underdeveloped, and it was obvious she was going to be blind as well as deaf. Well, she is now 3 months old, and proving to be a WONDERFUL, INTELLIGENT memeber of our family. (Which consists of 4 other dogs, a cat, a goat and 2 horses) she has taught me more in her short life that I ever learned in 20 years of Veterinary Technician work. She continues to thrive, and is learning to walk on a leash with the help of a ""Halti Lead"". She comes to us when we blow at her, and just wiggles with joy whenever the cat is in the room. She knows nothing but love. She adores everyone she meets, two or four legged. Thank you for being part of the intricate internet world that has helped me realize that I can do this, and give this wonderful baby a home.
